The world has come closer thanks to the advent of internet and it boons. Internet has made it possible to connect to people from far off place on one platform. It is technology which has made it possible for global markets to develop as companies are able to setup offices globally yet stay connected via the internet.

Educationists have realized the potential of the World Wide Web and are embracing it in their curriculum. One such change is the manner in which degree can be acquired. Unlike before, students can now enroll for online education wherein you can study at your ace and undertake other chores while studying.

Online education is apt for those who are unable to attend regular college due to various reasons. But before enrolling for an online course, consider the pros and cons of online education and then make your decision.

Strengths

  •          The main advantage of online learning is that students can participate in learning from anywhere, provided they have a computer and an internet connection. Many students are unable to attend regular classes due to varied reason, this is boon for them.
  •          Virtual classrooms are accessible 24 hours a day; therefore one can study according to their convenience and pace. You can also access the course material and lecture anytime of the day, this is particularly useful for those who need to reflect back on the lectures in order to gain better understanding.
  •          The format gives time to students to understand the subject thoroughly before proceeding ahead. Students can also comment and indulge in discussion and only after they have understood the concept do they need to proceed. On the other hand in traditional classroom, you do not get the liberty to comment or discuss later on, you must comment on the spot.
  •          In the online module, learner get a certain amount of anonymity thus there is no discrimination made on the basis of gender, age, dressing sense, race etc.
  •          The course material is available for download and therefore students do not require text books. There is also no need t travel anywhere, this in turn save you time as well as travelling cost.

Weaknesses

  •          In order to be able to enroll for an online program you need internet access, this may seem difficult for those living in remote areas or for those where internet is costly.
  •          A minimum level of computer knowledge is required to study online. Students need to be able to navigate through online study environments and know how use search engines, Newsgroups and FTP procedures. If you do not possess this knowledge it can become difficult to study online.
  •          Those students who are not self- motivated and are bad learners who need to be coaxed all the time cannot enroll for online programs as such kind of learning requires the will to study and time management skills.
  •          Online programs do not offer hand- on experience or practical knowledge.

There many pros and cons of online education which should be considered before you enroll for the program as your future is at stake.

Tue, 25 Sep 2012 23:55:00 -0700 Can a PALS certification program be a value addition to your career? http://urcareerinfo.posterous.com/can-a-pals-certification-program-be-a-value-a http://urcareerinfo.posterous.com/can-a-pals-certification-program-be-a-value-a

Pediatric Advanced Life Assistance or PALS is awarded to professionals who are interested to impart their value added service to infants and children in situations that threatens their life. The PALS training is very special and a modern course that focuses on a special acumen to allow professionals to intervene and allow medical treatment so that lives are saved. Recertification program is also conducted for people who were trained earlier and would like to freshen up their knowledge with modern inclusions. AHA or American Heart Institute also supports this and it lists various centers that offer authentic PALS courses.

Does PALS have an advantage?

The program has 14 hours of training after which an exam has to be attended by all candidates. Students who already have a PALS accreditation can also update their skills with the recertification program. The Glasgow Coma scale is also introduced which looks into the mindfulness of the child. With such a detection program, the course is certainly enriching. The personnel is allowed to practice once they are licensed with the degree. This gives the candidate the ability to detect an emergency and it allows the professional to facilitate  medical aid during a respiratory failure or a cardiac arrest. The method of resuscitation is also explained here. Nurses as well as physicians are highly benefited from the course.

Advantages of the PALS course

Modern techniques are discussed and used during the course, which are related to monitoring rhythm, disturbance noting, stimulation, revival, assessment and resuscitation. The importance of a classroom situation is also discussed here. The training also accentuates emergency situations. Accident cases are also discussed so that the students are aware of the essential first aid requirements during an urgent situation. Videos and lessons make the course interesting. The role of a team and the importance of dynamics of team support are also discussed in the course.

Upgrades are consistently done in the course based on latest know how and skill. The manual as well as curriculum is reviewed and updated to include modern findings. The online PALS training program is also getting popular and the PALS card is awarded to the participants after clearing the exam. This does not have any classroom formality and hence it gives flexibility to the learners. PALS recertification programs are also appreciated to improve the skills of a trained PALS awardee.

Seeking a PALS certification

Real life scenes are expressed during the course to give an actual situation, so that the learners are able to get a proper understanding about the emergency. The guide as well as study material is interesting. Unique methodologies as well as techniques are discussed and the use of a defibrillator is explained. Medical personnel and staff who are not directly handing an emergency for infants are also at an advantage after the PALS degree. This is a privileged course and it involves children and hence requires a special acumen. After passing a written examination, the PALS card is awarded to the candidate.

Mon, 03 Sep 2012 22:38:00 -0700 Heart disorders affecting children http://urcareerinfo.posterous.com/heart-disorders-affecting-children http://urcareerinfo.posterous.com/heart-disorders-affecting-children

The recent version of AHA guidelines produced in 2012 defines certain key points to tackle a paediatric emergency and the various heart problems among infant and children. However this report is applicable only for those who have undergone a PALS certification and are already aware of the newest growing health care trends and the related management to treat any crisis occurring to children.

Raised blood pressure

The trend of blood pressure problems is emerging in the adolescents and children.  During years 1988-1999 there was a raise of 2.3% in Pre High blood pressure and raise of 1% in BP was observed among children 8-17 tears. There was a high association of obesity linked to blood pressure which elevated the blood pressure trend furthermore after ten years.

Handling an emergency

The children for non traumatic cardiac arrest when treated with EMS showed the survival rate of only 8.6% till the hospital discharge. This data was analysed for children given bystander witnessed ventricular fibrillations and a survival rate of 62.5% was found till the discharge. This largely relates to immediate starting of the emergency procedure.

Cardiomyopathies

The report depicts an overall Cardiomyopathy incidence of 8.34 per 100,000 births for infants from 1-12 months and 0.70 for children below 18 years. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy being the commonest of inherited disorders is found in every 1/500 people. Apart from this, nearly 50,000 US citizens have Cardiomyopathy and are at a high risk of sudden death because of being relatively unaware about the condition.

Deaths out of hospital

A large number of sudden cardiac deaths reported consisted nearly 82% of athletes who collapsed during extra physical work or over exerting to prepare for an upcoming event. There were 54% of high school students and only 11% female athletes who reported sudden cardiac death.

Heart defects by birth

These are the congenital anomalies due to which at least 24% of deaths in infants have been reported as per AHA.  It is still continuing to decline but approximately 25% of live births need an invasive surgery before 1 year to survive.

An increase of nearly 28.5% was noticed in hospitalization rates when the child has to be admitted for congenital disorder of circulatory system and cardiac system.

Tobacco use

There is a very high risk of heart disease when tobacco is ingested in any form. Data analysis of year 2009 showed an overall use of any form of tobacco among 26% of teenagers and 19.5% of cigarette smoking among 9-12 grade students.

Children with low activity levels

A moderate amount of 23.1% adolescents were found to be somewhat inactive during last one week. Their sluggishness in the response to physical activity consisting of challenges which could elevate their respiratory state and improved heart rates showed low activity levels.
