Facebook is the world’s largest social network, with more than 900 million users. Mark Zuckerberg founded Face book in 2004 while he was attending Harvard University. The company’s 2012 IPO and valuation of about $100 billion are among the largest in tech history.

College admissions with the help of Facebook

With a growing trend among college admissions officers, involves a different method of checking an applicant: Facebook profile. Facebook has become an immense source of information for admission officers looking for background information on prospective students. In recent Kaplan test survey, it was reported that with help of social networking, officers were able to do a research on the applicants .The college admissions are based on the information of an individual’s profile page.

A large number of college admission professionals are observing social networking sites to get to know about their student. As a result, your online image can be a result in between a rejection and acceptance letter. For this reason, it is important your face book profile remains clean and doesn’t contain anything that can affect your image in the eyes of a college officer.

Does your Facebook profile have an impact on your college admission?

Yes, it most definitely does. College admission officers will check your Facebook profile to recruit you. There are few things they would want and not want to see on your Facebook profile. We can list them as pros and cons of Facebook.

Pros

  •     Images of you with a lot of awards that you have won. Adding them on your Facebook profile gives a total different impression.
  •     Use photos that show you shooting the winning basket or clearing the high jump bar. This will strengthen your image. College admission officers would love to see someone who’s fit and focused. Someone who has physical  as well as intellectual talents
  •     Add pictures that show you’ve been around travelling. Whether it’s inside the city or travel to different countries. College admissions officers want students who are global citizens and add cultures of this world.
  •     If you are member of the band, orchestra or choir, put up a photo. Music, which ever type is always an extracurricular activity to colleges.
  •     Images of you doing some community and volunteering work.

Cons

  •     The most common inappropriate image found on networking services is underage drinking problems. So if you’ve got a photo of you with a beer in your hand, clear away immediately.
  •     Photos of illegal drug usage. Make sure you have no pictures that have anything to do with drugs.
  •     Avoid pictures that have you and your friends doing obscene things. These photos will look very funny to you, but not an appealing sight for the admission officers.
  •     When you break rules it is very exciting, and therefore you may have posted images that show you breaking rules. Be alert though because this is a sign of bad judgment. Most college admissions will feel unimpressed by your disregard for the law.
  •     Don’t put up photos that have you showing a lot of skin. Pictures of you wearing miniskirts or Speedo briefs are not advisable especially when you are applying for college.
